(from Classical to Neoclassicism)

[?] - Not Sure About the Expression

The ancient Greece has a significant impact on the whole European civilisation, including art, architecture, philosophy and other aspects. In the field of architecture, period of construction can be confirmed if the building has an obvious characteristic in appearance.

Generally, a gable (explanation: a roof that has a mountain-like shape, with the slopes on both sides) with columns standing in a grid shape [?] is a typical Greek style. Years later, when the Romans took the place of Greeks and established their own empire, newly-built constructions were a little bit different from the former. Buildings at that time can be recognized through a symbol of arch (explanation: half-circle), for example, an arcade (explanation: a long gallery covered with an arch-shaped roof) or a barrel vault (explanation: a semi-sphere roof).

After Roman Empire, the Europe was divided into two parts, eastern and western, and building styles became different from then on, mainly due to the effect of religion. The eastern part, which was later known as Byzantine, was famous for its dome (explanation: a semi-sphere roof), almost the same as Romans, however, its more like an onion, expand a bit from near the bottom.

Meanwhile, the western Europe was in the period of Middle Ages, Romanesque and Gothic well described the architecture style at that time, especially the latter. With the impression of towering and sharp, as well as its general use of religion such as churches and cathedrals, it is believed that this kind of building is showing authorities. (Im not quite convinced about that. Its beyond my knowledge to make sure. [?] But I think the form was influenced by many elements, like religion, technique and development of architecture itself.)

Renaissance (carefully proportioned (explanation: calculate to be equal in each side)), Baroque and Rococo (both pay much attention to luxury and complexity) were symbolic [?] styles during the following 400 years. And after that, architects returned to Classical ideas (Neoclassicism).
